Course Description

Our principal objective is to help students nourish their musical talents so that they may utilize their abilities for the benefit of society. Our curriculum with a special emphasis on the field of education offers classes in vocal music, piano, music theory, the history of Asian and Western musics, wind and percussion instruments, traditional Japanese instruments, recorder, conducting, elementary and junior high school music education, and other areas related to music teaching. Students choose their major from fields such as vocal music, instrumental music, composition, arranging and orchestration, musicology and music education. Students are given opportunities to demonstrate their achievements and this is one of the outstanding characteristics of our course. In their sophomore year, students begin to participate in in-house performances. Here and at the graduation concert they perform as solists, play with other performers, accompany vocalists on the piano, play the harpsichord in early music ensembles, or play the electric organ to accompany concertos. They also play pieces written by composition majors, sing in the chorus, and play in ensembles. Through such activities they learn to appreciate music and experience the joi of performing.
