Course Description

This course aims to produce competitive individuals proficient in foreign languages who will actively play important roles in international settings through knowing and understanding various cultures and studying ideal forms of intercultural communication. Most students register for our distinctive one-year language classes, named "Intensive-90 ("I-60" for Chinese language)," in the freshman or sophomore year. The languages taught are English, German, French, and Chinese, and students choose one language according to their own interest and future plans. As these classes are held three times a week (twice for Chinese) in dialogue-oriented styles, and conducted mainly by native speakers of each language, they are highly effective. In their second year, students divide into five areas of studies--Japanese, Chinese, English and American, German, and French--to study the cultural and linguistic aspects of each language/country and multilateral relationships among various cultures. With the annual teacher-to-student ratio of 13 to 20, the classes are kept small, creating a favorable learning environment. Many graduates seek careers in a wide variety of fields in the private sector and in the public sector as well, while some continue their research in higher academic institutions.
